AMD and OpenAI have struck a large-scale partnership in which AMD will supply GPUs to support OpenAI’s future AI infrastructure. In the first phase, OpenAI will deploy 1 gigawatt of AMD’s upcoming MI450 chips in the second half of 2026. Over time, the agreement covers up to 6 gigawatts of computing power. As part of the deal, AMD granted OpenAI a warrant to buy up to 160 million shares (roughly 10 % of AMD) contingent on milestones. AMD’s stock jumped over 25-30 % following the announcement.
This agreement also signals OpenAI’s intent to diversify its hardware partners beyond just Nvidia. The deal is pitched by the companies as mutually beneficial: AMD gains a large AI customer, and OpenAI secures massive compute capacity for its models and systems.
